Backahill Divests Foodhills AB to Finnish Company Apetit – The Next Step in the Company’s Development

At the beginning of 2025, Backahill initiated the process of finding a new owner for Foodhills AB. It is now confirmed that the company will be acquired by Finnish Apetit, a well-renowned player in the frozen vegetable sector with extensive experience and deep knowledge in pea cultivation. Apetit has long been cultivating green peas in Finland and is now strengthening its position by establishing operations in Sweden.

After several years of continuous development and investment in Foodhills AB, the company now stands on a solid foundation. Today, Foodhills is Sweden’s largest producer of green peas and is recognized for the high quality of its products. The production facility in Bjuv has a capacity of approximately 15,000 tons, with the potential to double that volume at full expansion.

“We are very pleased that Apetit is taking over the baton. The timing feels exactly right for an industrial owner with strong industry expertise to take Foodhills to the next level. This is a long-term benefit for employees, growers, and customers alike,” says Lennart Mauritzson, CEO & Group President of Backahill AB.

In recent years, Foodhills has secured several important customer contracts, both in Sweden and internationally. In September, a new agreement was signed with Findus for the supply of Swedish peas from Bjuv – which also marks Findus returning its cultivation to the area.

The sale marks a new chapter in the company’s development. Since 2017, Backahill has invested in building a modern food production facility and in establishing close collaborations with growers, customers, and other key partners.

“Our involvement in Foodhills has always been driven by a strong belief in the potential of developing Swedish food production. With Apetit as the new owner, we are confident that Foodhills’ future is in good hands,” concludes Lennart Mauritzson.

Apetit sees the acquisition of Foodhills as a very positive and strong beginning to the next phase of the company’s growth.

“With the acquisition of Foodhills, we are taking an important step in our growth journey. We are not only strengthening our presence in the Swedish market, but also building on the expertise and knowledge that Foodhills’ employees already possess. Together, we are creating new opportunities to offer sustainable, locally grown products to more consumers – and laying the foundation for a stronger and more sustainable future in food production,” says Esa Mäki, CEO of Apetit.
